Bordering northern Mitchell County is Roan Mountain State Park at over 6,000’ elevations.   This mountain is covered in one of the thickest stands of coniferous forest, has the world’s largest Rhododendron Gardens, and offers the longest stretch of grassy bald in the Appalachians.

The Appalachian Trail runs along the ridge between North Carolina and Tennessee, high atop Roan Mountain.  This well-worn trail runs from Georgia to Maine – for a hefty 2,175 miles.  Pass through Pisgah National Forest in this area.

The Blue Ridge Parkway runs along the southern boundary of Mitchell County.  With its many overlooks and hiking trails, its well worth a day of leisurely touring.
