Travel to McDowell County and you may witness the Brown Mountain Lights, the region's most popular mystery!  On certain clearer evenings, small but brilliant spherical lights or orbs can be seen bobbing up and down, disappearing and reappearing.

The Orchard At Altapass is more than a century old apple orchard.  You can take home unforgettable memories of bluegrass music, hayrides, clogging, mountain cooking, area artists and craftsmen, original plays, storytelling and more.

The state run Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort exhibits mountain lifestyle and history from its earliest inhabitants.  The Marion Depot is an 1860’s building and the oldest surviving train depot on the western rail line. Exhibits include handmade musical instruments and artifacts used during the expansion of the railroad.

Linville Caverns deep inside Humpback Mountain is the only show cavern in the Carolinas. See beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, and an array of icicle-like formations.
