Attractions in Macon County are mostly the great outdoors. Like waterfalls?  There are sixteen scenic falls in SW North Carolina, including areas of Nantahala National Forest, Pisgah National Forest and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Several of the falls are over 100’ including Cullasaja Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Whitewater Falls, at 411’ - the highest falls in Eastern America.

White water rafting or kayaking are available on the Nantahala and Ocoee Rivers., while tubing and canoeing are great fun on the Little Tennessee River.  For hikers, the Appalachian Trail (Georgia to Maine) passes just a few miles West of Franklin, the Bartram Trail also passes through Franklin.

Motorcycle enthusiasts thrill to the challenge of riding the “Tail of the Dragon” at Deals Gap featuring 318 curves in 11 miles. It’s America ’s number one motorcycle and sports car road. Patton Valley Loop (20 miles), Cowee Loop (30 miles), and Standing Indian Loop (25 miles) have some pretty intense curves of their own.
