JOYCE KILMER MEMORIAL FOREST – is one of the few remaining virgin hardwood tracts in the Appalachians. Some of the 400 year old poplars are more than 20 feet in circumference and tower more than 100 feet tall. A series of trails, the “Joyce Kilmer Loops”, provide enjoyable hiking past the largest trees.

STECOAH VALLEY CENTER, on Highway 28, hosts Appalachian music and festivals just about every weekend from April thru October.

FONTANA LAKE - Fontana Lake stretches 29 miles across the northern boundary of Graham County. The Great Smoky Mountain National Park borders the lake to the north.

LAKE SANTEETLAH offers an abundance of camping opportunities, and its shoreline is more than 75% National Forest; insurance that it will never be spoiled by development.

SLICKROCK CREEK WILDERNESS AREA - Slickrock Creek is one of the most adventurous of the trails in Joyce Kilmer. The trailhead is next to the Tapoco Dam, famous for the jump scene in The Fugitive. There are many crossings of the creek, so plan to get wet.
