Yancey County is home to Mt. Mitchell. At 6,684’ elevation, it is the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Eighteen others peaks exceed 6,300’ elevations providing some of the best hiking in the North Carolina mountains.
Burnsville is the county’s only incorporated town, although the back roads are sprinkled with communities like Daybook, Egypt, Micaville and Beelog. Organized around a central square, Burnsville offers a pleasant mix of shops, galleries and restaurants.
The Parkway Playhouse, on the edge of town, offers professional summer theatre musicals, comedies and serious dramas.
