Whether it's horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, or just a walk in the woods, DuPont State park is a must see for any avid outdoor enthusiast.

As a North Carolina vacation destination, this county is loaded with cultural, historical, and natural beauty. A day spent browsing the many downtown Hendersonville galleries and antique stores will not soon be forgotten.

Visit the home of Carl Sandburg, winner of two Pulitzer Prizes, who entertained heads of state, presidents, and Hollywood movie stars, with only a formal 8th grade education. A group of struggling performers, The Vagabonds, gave birth in 1952 to the Flat Rock Playhouse. Later, in 1961, by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly, Flat Rock Playhouse was officially designated The State Theatre of North Carolina.

Another great literary icon, Thomas Wolfe, found inspiration in Henderson County as well. It is home to the angel he references in his first novel, Look Homeward Angel. This historical monument is located in Oakdale Cemetery on Highway 64, just a short distance from downtown.

If you'd like to see an excellent example of a late 19th century farmhouse, be sure to visit Historic Johnson Farm. Completed in 1880, it was once the home of wealthy tobacco farmer, Oliver Moss.

While out exploring Henderson County's historic accomplishments, you'll want to plan a trip to the Western North Carolina Air Museum. It is the first air museum in the state of North Carolina and features award winning restored and replica antique and vintage airplanes. Another delightful stop on your Henderson County vacation is the Bullington Center, a public botanical garden with individual herb, butterfly, mountain habitat, and perennial border gardens.

You can entertain the kids further by making at stop at "Hands On!", A Child's Gallery providing educational exhibits that stimulate the imagination and make learning fun.
