Part of the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area

A vacation to the North Carolina mountains would be incomplete without a visit to Ashe County. Some of the "must do" things on your list should be a canoe trip on the New River, a visit to North Carolina's only cheese factory, or marveling at one of the country's only two Churches of the Frescoes. Painted by world-renowned artist Ben Long, the artwork beautifully integrates with the century-old Episcopal chapel and grounds surrounding it.

You can finish the day off by browsing the many art galleries, craft stores and quaint boutiques lining Main Street in West Jefferson. Ashe County and the Jeffersons are located atop the Blue Ridge Mountains amidst spectacular peaks and open rolling meadows. The natural beauty and milder summers attract visitors from around the country and have enticed many a traveler into calling Ashe County home.

Numerous heritage events are staged throughout the year, including the very popular "Christmas in July", where most of Main Street is filled with vendors selling their creations. Looking for that special souvenir? Arts & crafts of every shape and size can be found in every nook and cranny in the county. So whether you come to cut your own Christmas tree on a snow-dusted fall weekend, or prefer a hot cup of "Joe" on a cool summer morning from the front porch of your log cabin, Ashe County is a truly unique vacation destination!
